Some of the junior children at Lake Tekapo School, in the South Island of New Zealand, have sent their Flat Stanley’s on an adventure to Indonesia. Their class is learning about different cultures and their Stanleys are going to help out by sharing their experiences in Indonesia and maybe other destinations.

Sanur (Sah-noor) Bali

Watching the locals and tourists having a swim at Sanur Beach

Spending some time on Sanur beach
Sanur is a beach town on the east coast of Bali. People like to visit here because there is an offshore reef that makes the water by the beach nice and calm.

This man is cooking Nikki a chicken noodle soup for 10,000 IDR (Indonesian Rupiah). Do you know how much that is in New Zealand Dollars?

There are more motorbikes than cars in Bali.

Petrol for motorbikes is sold on the side of the road in plastic or glass bottles.

Bali Currency

The money over here is very different to New Zealand. The currency here is Indonesian Rupiah. They have mostly notes and some coins. You have to be able to read big numbers. Can you read these numbers? The Stanley's are a little confused.

20,000

10,000

5,000

50,000

2,000

500 and 1,000

200 and 100

Use this currency converter to work out how New Zealand Dollars (NZD) and Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) compare.

You will need to use your knowledge of alphabetical order to find them on the lists.
